Atlantic salmon farming is one of the world's largest aquaculture industries, with significant welfare challenges including sea lice infestations, crowding, handling stress, and high mortality rates.
Atlantic salmon aquaculture imposes substantial welfare costs that are increasingly documented by welfare scientists. Sea lice infestations cause progressive skin erosion, open wounds, and pain at infestation sites, reducing feeding behaviour and growth. The treatments used to control lice — including thermal treatments exposing fish to warm water and mechanical brushing — cause acute physiological stress and physical injury. High stocking densities limit normal swimming and social behaviour, and crowding during handling operations for treatment or transfer causes intense acute stress measurable through cortisol levels. Mortality rates of 15-20% per annum indicate endemic disease pressure and welfare compromise. The welfare of individual salmon is further compromised by the disruption of their migratory life history — cage-farmed salmon cannot fulfil natural upstream migration drives. The industry is aware of these challenges and some producers invest in welfare monitoring and improved conditions, but systemic improvements are needed. Consumer choice of certified higher-welfare salmon products, or reduced salmon consumption, sends market signals that drive improvement.
