Both animals show physiological stress markers including elevated cortisol, reduced feed intake, and disrupted sleep patterns for multiple days. The calf subsequently faces a period of social isolation or peer housing with no maternal relationship, missing learned behaviours and comfort that would normally be provided by the dam. Extended calf-at-foot or dam-rearing systems substantially reduce these welfare harms and have been shown to be operationally viable on farms that implement them thoughtfully.
