Environmental enrichment for pigs reduces injurious behaviour, improves welfare, and demonstrates that even within commercial constraints, meaningful positive experiences are achievable for intelligent farm animals.
Enrichment for farmed pigs is both a welfare obligation and a practical production benefit, yet the gap between minimum legal requirements and genuinely effective enrichment remains wide. A single hanging chain — the most common enrichment provision in conventional systems — does not satisfy the rooting, foraging, and object manipulation drives of intelligent pigs. Effective enrichment is organic, manipulable, destructible or renewed frequently, and provided at floor level where pigs naturally direct investigatory behaviour. Straw is the gold standard enrichment substrate — it satisfies rooting motivation, improves thermal comfort, and dramatically reduces tail biting rates compared to bare concrete floors. Where deep straw bedding is impractical, chopped straw, paper, and peat provided in enrichment racks offer meaningful improvement. The welfare benefit of effective enrichment extends beyond preventing injurious behaviour to actively promoting positive experiences — pigs provided with varied enrichment show play behaviour, exploration, and social interaction that indicate positive affective states. Farms transitioning to higher-welfare housing are finding that investment in enrichment reduces the costly and welfare-harming practice of tail docking.
