Halibut aquaculture welfare is complicated by the species' relatively recent entry into commercial farming — many of the management practices that have been refined over decades for Atlantic salmon are still being developed for halibut. Light management is critical; halibut are more sensitive to light than many other farmed species and inappropriate light intensity or photoperiod causes stress responses, abnormal swimming behaviour, and appetite suppression. Pseudoalbinism — abnormal pigmentation affecting up to 50% of farmed halibut in some operations — is thought to relate to light and dietary factors during early rearing and indicates suboptimal conditions during critical developmental periods. Their large eventual size means grading and transfer operations involve handling large, powerful fish, causing significant stress and physical injury risk if managed poorly. Water quality management, particularly temperature and oxygen levels in the cold-water species' optimal range (12-14 degrees Celsius), is critical for both welfare and growth. Development of best practice guidelines specific to halibut welfare, incorporating the species' unique sensory biology and behavioural ecology, is an ongoing need in this emerging sector.
