Cattle in heat stress show clear behavioural signs of discomfort — panting with open mouths, seeking shade, standing in water, and reducing activity to minimise heat generation. At high levels of heat stress, thermoregulatory failure causes dangerous hyperthermia with risk of heat stroke and death. The welfare harm of heat stress is compounded by disrupted social behaviour as cattle bunch together in shade regardless of dominance relationships, and by reduced access to feed and water as temperature peaks during daylight hours. Active cooling interventions — shade provision, ventilation, and sprinkler-fan systems that cool cattle by evaporation — directly reduce the welfare harm of heat stress and should be considered essential provisions in warm climates. Adjusting feeding times to cooler morning and evening periods, and providing cool clean water ad libitum, reduces heat load from digestion and supports thermoregulation. Farmers who delay implementing cooling measures until cattle show severe distress symptoms impose avoidable welfare costs.
