The European eel is critically endangered, yet its farming depends on capture of wild glass eels — juveniles that would otherwise contribute to the desperate need to rebuild the species. Eels farmed at commercial density show physiological stress responses. Their complex migratory life cycle biology makes captive conditions intrinsically challenging. Reducing eel consumption — particularly in the face of wild population collapse — is both a conservation and welfare imperative until the very limited volume of artificial propagation might eventually support sustainable farming without wild capture.
