Thermal delousing — rapidly exposing fish to 28-34°C water — causes pronounced stress responses and, in some conditions, mortality. The welfare costs of both infestation and treatment are real and significant. Preventive approaches that reduce lice burden before treatment is necessary — including snorkel barriers, optimized positioning in the water column, and cleaner fish — have better welfare profiles than reactive treatment. The development and adoption of laser delousing and other precision technologies represents a genuine welfare improvement direction. Reducing reliance on conventional salmon farming through dietary shifts reduces aggregate welfare harm.
