The welfare of dairy goat kids in the immediate neonatal period is among the most neglected areas of farm animal welfare. Disbudding without anaesthesia is performed on millions of kids annually and represents a preventable source of acute pain. The combination of early separation, male kid culling, and painful disbudding means many dairy goat kids experience multiple welfare insults in their first days. Unlike dairy cattle, dairy goat welfare has received limited public attention or regulatory reform. The commercial viability of extended suckling systems demonstrates that welfare improvement is possible without prohibitive cost. Consumer awareness and certification scheme requirements are the primary levers for change.
