Broiler welfare certification creates a market mechanism to drive welfare improvements beyond legal minimums. The most impactful change in certified higher-welfare systems is the use of slower-growing breeds: the genetic basis of standard commercial broiler welfare problems means that breed selection is more powerful than any other single intervention. Slower-growing birds have dramatically lower rates of leg disorders, heart conditions, and lameness that are epidemic in fast-growing strains. Reduced stocking density and enrichment provision further improve welfare but have smaller effects than breed change.
