GI stasis is a life-threatening condition in rabbits in which gut motility slows or stops. It is largely preventable through appropriate diet and can deteriorate rapidly without prompt veterinary care.
GI stasis causes severe abdominal pain and distress in affected rabbits, and its welfare significance is heightened by how rapidly it can deteriorate to a life-threatening state. Rabbits experiencing gut stasis suffer from both the pain of gas accumulation and the physiological consequences of not eating, as rabbit gut physiology requires continuous fermentation of high-fibre material. The condition is largely preventable through appropriate diet and husbandry, making it an important welfare education priority for rabbit owners. Recognising early signs of reduced appetite and fewer droppings enables prompt treatment before the condition becomes critical. Post-recovery management including dietary correction, stress reduction, and addressing any underlying painful conditions prevents recurrence.
