Research into pig enrichment has advanced substantially in recent decades. Evidence-based enrichment provision is now recognised as essential for pig welfare in intensive systems.
Pig enrichment science has moved well beyond providing a single hanging chain that satisfies legal requirements while failing to meet behavioural needs. Research demonstrates clearly that pigs require sustained engagement with complex, manipulable materials that allow rooting, chewing, exploration, and foraging. Straw-based deep litter systems remain the most effective enrichment substrate, but many intensive systems are incompatible with straw due to slurry management constraints. The challenge for the industry is developing practical enrichment solutions that work within existing housing systems while meaningfully addressing pig behavioural needs. Hanging enrichment objects, foraging challenges, and destructible materials such as wood and compressed straw blocks provide partial solutions. The welfare case for fundamental housing system changes that accommodate genuine enrichment provision is increasingly compelling.
