Beekeeping welfare operates at two scales simultaneously: colony welfare and individual bee welfare. Colony health — nutrition, disease management, queen quality — determines the welfare of tens of thousands of individual bees who depend on the colony functioning effectively. Transport of colonies for commercial pollination services causes significant disruption stress. Varroa mite infestations, when untreated, cause colony collapse after months of individual bee parasitism and disease. Individual bee welfare is less certain scientifically but growing evidence suggests bees have richer cognitive and possibly experiential lives than previously assumed.
