The welfare of dairy goat kids is substantially neglected compared to that of dairy calves, despite facing equivalent or greater welfare challenges in many operations. The killing of male kids at birth, which is standard practice in most dairy goat systems, is one of the most significant welfare concerns. Early separation causes distress in both does and kids. Providing extended milk feeding, social housing for kids, and appropriate care for male kids, including either rearing for meat or humane on-farm euthanasia with appropriate techniques, are key welfare improvements. Consumer awareness of dairy goat welfare is lower than for dairy cattle, creating an advocacy gap. Certification standards for dairy goat welfare are less developed than for dairy cattle, and stronger species-specific standards are needed.
