Outdoor pig production genuinely addresses many of the most significant welfare problems of intensive indoor systems by allowing expression of rooting, wallowing, nesting, and complex social behaviour. However, outdoor systems are not automatically high welfare, as overcrowded outdoor paddocks without adequate shelter, shade, mud access, and feed presentation can still compromise welfare. The welfare of outdoor pigs depends critically on stocking density, shelter provision, wallowing opportunities, and predator protection. Finishing pigs that are born outdoors but moved indoors for the growing and finishing phase experience a welfare transition that may negate some early-life benefits. Genuine free-range and outdoor finishing systems that maintain outdoor access throughout the production cycle offer the most comprehensive welfare benefits.
