Red panda welfare in captivity is critically dependent on appropriate thermal management and bamboo provision. These animals evolved in cool montane forests and cannot regulate body temperature adequately in warm climates, making air-conditioned or naturally cool enclosures essential. Bamboo must be provided in large quantities of appropriate species throughout the day, and dietary supplementation is needed to compensate for the poor nutrient extraction typical of obligate bamboo feeders. Social management must respect their solitary nature, housing animals individually or in compatible pairs with the ability to separate when needed. Climbing structures of appropriate height and complexity, with access to elevated resting platforms where red pandas prefer to spend much of their time, are fundamental welfare provisions.
