Male calves born to dairy cows have historically been considered of little value. Improving their welfare from birth through slaughter is a significant industry-wide ethical responsibility.
The welfare situation for male dairy calves reflects a structural economic problem in the dairy industry: calves that cannot produce milk have historically had no commercial value, resulting in on-farm killing or sale through low-welfare veal systems. Addressing this requires both consumer-side demand creation for rose veal and dairy beef, and supply-side investment in rearing systems appropriate for male dairy calves. The killing of day-old calves represents a welfare harm distinct from their subsequent death, as it occurs without the care, nutrition, and social experience that even short-lived animals deserve. The most progressive dairy welfare approach either eliminates male births through sexed semen or invests in appropriate rearing systems that provide male calves with lives worth living before slaughter.
