Otitis externa causes significant ongoing discomfort and pain that impairs quality of life in affected dogs through persistent itching, pain on jaw movement, and head shaking that can itself cause problems including aural haematoma. Chronic ear disease that is inadequately managed creates a cycle of recurring infection and inflammation that degrades the ear canal structure over time, ultimately causing irreversible changes and potentially requiring surgical intervention. Welfare-centred management identifies and addresses the underlying cause rather than simply treating acute infections with topical antibiotics. In dogs with allergic disease as the driver of recurrent otitis, managing the allergy through appropriate systemic treatment prevents repeated ear infections more effectively than frequent topical treatment alone.
