Cetacean stranding response involves acute welfare decisions under time pressure. Stranded animals experience physiological stress from dehydration, overheating, gravity-induced organ compression, and whatever underlying condition caused the stranding. First responder decisions — to attempt refloating, to provide supportive care while awaiting veterinary assessment, or to proceed with euthanasia — have immediate welfare consequences. The goal is to minimize the duration of suffering through rapid assessment and appropriate action. Mass stranding responses face the additional complexity of managing dozens to hundreds of animals simultaneously, requiring coordination, triage prioritization, and often difficult euthanasia decisions for animals too compromised to survive.
