The type of farrowing system — conventional crate, temporary restraint, loose housing, or outdoor — significantly affects the welfare of both sows and piglets during one of the most welfare-critical production periods.
Farrowing system choice encapsulates one of the most painful welfare trade-offs in pig production: the severe, prolonged welfare cost to sows confined in conventional crates versus the increased crushing risk to piglets in free systems. Welfare science has moved toward resolving this trade-off rather than accepting it: loose farrowing systems with good design — appropriate crate width, comfortable substrate, good stockperson training — can achieve piglet mortality rates comparable to conventional crates while substantially improving sow welfare. The direction of welfare policy is clear in progressive jurisdictions: farrowing crate bans are increasing.
