Dairy calves face significant welfare challenges from early maternal separation, male calf disposal, and intensive rearing systems that are beginning to receive greater public and regulatory attention.
Dairy calf welfare sits at the heart of the most fundamental ethical tension in dairy production: the industry depends on continuous pregnancy to maintain lactation, but the resulting calves — particularly males — have historically been treated as byproducts to be disposed of. The welfare costs of this system are considerable: acute distress at separation, which is now well-documented and beyond scientific dispute; the premature death of millions of male calves globally; and the welfare challenges of intensive calf rearing without maternal care. Progressive approaches including delayed separation, beef-cross breeding, veal systems with acceptable welfare standards, and extended suckling experiments are all partial improvements. Consumer willingness to pay for dairy from systems with better calf welfare standards is the market signal needed to accelerate adoption.
