Parvovirus causes extreme suffering — severe vomiting and bloody diarrhoea, intense pain, and rapid deterioration cause distress that is difficult to overstate. Death without treatment is common within days of onset. The tragedy of parvovirus is its complete preventability through vaccination. Outbreaks occur disproportionately in communities where veterinary access and vaccination uptake are low, often due to cost barriers. Welfare-centred approaches to parvovirus include community vaccination programmes, subsidised puppy vaccination schemes, and early education of new puppy owners. Infected dogs require intensive hospitalisation to survive, placing heavy financial burden on owners who are often already vulnerable.
