Horses are social animals whose welfare depends significantly on social contact — companion animals can support wellbeing when herd management is not possible.
Equine social welfare is an often overlooked aspect of horse keeping. Horses evolved as herd animals with continuous social contact — isolation causes genuine psychological distress documented by elevated stress hormones and stereotypy development. Single horse keeping is common but carries welfare costs that owners should actively mitigate through appropriate companion arrangements. A bonded companion of any compatible species partially addresses the isolation welfare problem, though equine companions most fully meet natural social needs. Where full herd life is not possible, at minimum providing visual and auditory contact with other horses through field arrangement or stable design should be considered a welfare obligation.
