Chicken welfare labels vary enormously in what they guarantee — from meaningful welfare improvement to essentially marketing language. Welfare-centred consumer choices require understanding what specific labels actually specify rather than assuming outdoor access or farm imagery indicates good welfare. The highest welfare broiler standards currently available include the Better Chicken Commitment specifications: slower-growing breeds, maximum 30 kg/m2 stocking density, enrichment, natural light, and humane slaughter. Organic certification provides reasonable welfare improvement but does not specify breed. Free-range is an improvement on standard indoor but may use fast-growing breeds at high indoor density. Knowing what labels mean enables purchasing decisions that genuinely support welfare improvement.
