Disease in farmed trout causes significant suffering. Bacterial septicaemia, gill infections, and viral haemorrhagic disease are painful conditions — fish experiencing these show clear behavioural abnormalities indicative of distress. The welfare response requires prevention-first thinking: vaccination programmes, good water quality, appropriate stocking density, and biosecurity reduce disease pressure substantially. When disease occurs, prompt diagnosis enables targeted treatment. Mass mortality events represent welfare failures at scale that appropriate management can prevent. Reducing antibiotic reliance through vaccination and environmental management simultaneously improves fish welfare, reduces antimicrobial resistance, and protects human health.
