Where dipping remains practised, welfare depends critically on correct technique, dip concentration, water temperature, and appropriate sheep condition. Forced immersion is acutely stressful — sheep cannot avoid the experience and cortisol responses are marked. Deaths occur through aspiration, hypothermia, and chemical toxicity in poorly managed dips. The welfare case for switching to alternative ectoparasite treatments where effective is strong. For producers who continue dipping, staff training, correct dip preparation, appropriate weather conditions, and rapid throughput all reduce welfare impact. Post-dip shelter and access to dry bedding reduce hypothermia risk significantly.
