Heat stroke is a life-threatening emergency in dogs that causes severe suffering and high mortality. Prevention through owner education is far more effective than treatment.

Welfare Considerations

Heat stroke causes extreme suffering. Dogs in heat stroke experience severe distress, disorientation, collapse, seizures, and the systemic organ failure that follows uncontrolled hyperthermia. The experience before collapse — panting frantically, salivating profusely, desperate for cooling — is acutely distressing. Surviving dogs may have lasting organ damage from renal, hepatic, and neurological injury. The tragedy of heat stroke is its near-complete preventability: never leaving dogs in vehicles, avoiding exercise during peak heat, providing shade and water, and recognising early signs all eliminate most cases. Brachycephalic breed owners require specific education about their dogs' extreme vulnerability.

What You Can Do

Never leave a dog in a car during warm weather — even briefly and even with windows cracked
Walk dogs in early morning or evening during hot weather, not during peak afternoon heat
Provide shade and constant fresh water access for outdoor dogs
Learn early signs of heat stroke — excessive panting, drooling, red gums, staggering — and cool immediately
Consider whether brachycephalic dogs can safely participate in any strenuous exercise during warm months
