Welfare certification for farmed fish and shellfish is an emerging tool for driving improvements at scale. Understanding what schemes exist, what they require, and their limitations enables informed consumer choices.
Aquaculture welfare certification is in its infancy compared to terrestrial farm animal certification. Current schemes primarily address environmental sustainability — water use, feed sourcing, effluent management — with welfare as a secondary concern. The challenge is technical: validated welfare indicators for fish that are practical to audit at commercial scale are still being established. Nevertheless, the direction is positive: growing consumer awareness, regulatory pressure, and retailer commitments are pushing certification bodies to incorporate more meaningful welfare criteria. For consumers, choosing certified over uncertified aquaculture products provides a signal to the market even if current certification imperfectly captures welfare. Engaging retailers on what their certifications actually require for welfare — and what they do not — drives further improvement.
