Enrichment rotation addresses one of the most practical challenges in pig welfare management: the rapid habituation that reduces the welfare value of any single item after initial novelty wears off. Pigs are intelligent and curious — they investigate new objects thoroughly, then lose interest. A static chain in the corner of a pen provides minimal welfare benefit to pigs that investigated it on day one. Rotation, combined with complex and destructible materials that remain engaging through change, maintains the exploratory and play behaviour that indicates positive welfare states. The management investment in enrichment rotation is modest — simply alternating between two or three item types significantly extends welfare benefit without requiring expensive resources.
