Feedlot BRD is the most significant welfare and economic problem in beef production. Prevention through stress reduction and vaccination is more humane and effective than treatment-dependent approaches.
Feedlot BRD welfare is fundamentally preventable. The disease complex is triggered by identifiable stressors — transport, mixing, weather exposure, and abrupt diet changes — that can be mitigated through management. Preconditioning calves before feedlot entry, providing adequate rest and nutrition on arrival, and implementing vaccination protocols appropriate to regional pathogen pressure reduce both disease incidence and the welfare costs of treatment. When disease does occur, early identification is welfare-critical — BRD detected at clinical score 2 responds dramatically better to treatment than disease presenting at score 3-4, both in welfare and economic terms. The investment in prevention creates health monitoring cultures that also improve treatment outcomes when prevention fails.
