Spinal cord injury recovery welfare depends on the combined commitment of the veterinary team and the owner. Dogs with complete loss of motor function who retain deep pain sensation can, with appropriate surgical intervention and intensive rehabilitation, recover ambulatory function. Dogs who do not recover ambulation can achieve excellent quality of life with appropriate mobility aids, adapted environments, and meticulous nursing care. The welfare decision — whether to pursue rehabilitation — should be based on honest quality of life assessment rather than the assumption that paralysis equals poor welfare. Many paraplegic dogs are mentally engaged, free from pain, and demonstrably happy by all observable indicators.
