Gastrointestinal disease is a leading cause of veterinary visits in cats. Accurate diagnosis distinguishes treatable from progressive conditions and enables welfare-positive management.
Feline gastrointestinal disease causes chronic suffering through the combination of nausea, abdominal discomfort, nutritional malabsorption, and progressive weight loss. Cats with chronic untreated gastrointestinal disease lose body condition, become lethargic, and show the reduced engagement with life that characterises significant chronic illness. The diagnostic journey can be frustrating — empirical dietary trials, blood tests, and imaging may all be required before a diagnosis is confirmed. However, the welfare investment in accurate diagnosis pays returns: IBD treated with appropriate immunosuppression and dietary management improves dramatically; alimentary lymphoma has a median survival of 2 years with appropriate chemotherapy. Accurate diagnosis enables targeted welfare-positive treatment.
