FeLV management welfare spans both prevention and long-term care. Prevention through vaccination is the most impactful welfare intervention — protecting cats from a disease that causes significant immune and neoplastic complications. For FeLV-positive cats, the welfare approach is palliative and supportive: managing secondary infections promptly, monitoring for anaemia and lymphoma, and maintaining quality of life for as long as the cat thrives. The welfare challenge in FeLV-positive cat management is honest prognostication — some cats progress rapidly, others live comfortably for years. Regular monitoring enables early detection of progression and timely palliative decisions. Shelter euthanasia of FeLV-positive cats without individual assessment of health status is ethically unjustified.
