Endurance riding places extreme physiological demands on horses. Welfare-conscious management, veterinary oversight, and vet-gate monitoring protect horses competing in this demanding discipline.
Endurance welfare is primarily about the interface between sport ambition and physiological capacity. The mandatory vet gate system is the welfare protection mechanism — trained vets who eliminate horses showing metabolic compromise or gait abnormalities prevent the continuation that would cause welfare harm. The welfare breakdown occurs when horses are pushed beyond their conditioning level by competitive pressure, when dehydration goes unmanaged, or when competitors evade welfare elimination attempts. Rider education, appropriate conditioning programmes, and mandatory vet gate compliance are the welfare infrastructure of the sport. The elimination-on-the-day welfare intervention is ultimately less effective than the prevention-through-preparation that good horsemanship provides.
