Welfare measurement is the bridge between welfare science and welfare practice. Without measurement, claims about welfare improvement are unverifiable and management decisions lack feedback. The most credible welfare assessments are animal-based — measuring what the animal is actually experiencing rather than only the resources and management provided. A farm with excellent facilities but poor management may have worse animal-based welfare outcomes than a simpler facility with better stockpersonship.
