Heat stress causes significant welfare harm and production losses in cattle. Effective management through shade, cooling, and housing modification reduces suffering during heat events.
Heat stress causes genuine suffering — cattle panting heavily, bunching in shade, standing in water, and showing the lethargy and reduced appetite of significant thermal discomfort. The cumulative welfare cost across millions of cattle during summer heat events is enormous. The management solutions are proven and deployable: shade reduces radiant heat load dramatically; sprinklers and fans provide evaporative cooling in housed systems; and modified feeding schedules (night feeding when temperatures are lower) reduce the thermogenic effect of rumen fermentation during peak heat. Climate change is intensifying heat stress events, making welfare management more rather than less important over time.
