Rabbits kept outdoors face unique welfare risks from predators, weather extremes, and inadequate housing, but outdoor environments can also enrich their lives when managed well.
Outdoor rabbit housing requires careful design to meet rabbits' physical and psychological needs. Hutches alone are insufficient; rabbits need attached exercise runs of at least three metres in length for daily use. Predator-proofing is non-negotiable given the severe fear and cardiac stress that even nearby predators cause. In cold climates, additional insulation and protection from freezing temperatures are necessary. Regular social companionship with another rabbit reduces chronic stress from isolation.
