Anxiety disorders are among the most common welfare problems in dogs, causing chronic suffering and behavioural problems that respond well to early, integrated treatment.
Anxious dogs experience genuine suffering characterised by fear, helplessness, and chronic stress. Effective treatment combines behaviour modification using positive reinforcement, environmental management to reduce triggers, and medication where indicated by severity. Early socialisation and positive early experiences are the strongest preventive measures. Punishment-based training methods worsen anxiety and should be avoided entirely. Breed selection should consider temperament and anxiety predisposition.
