The welfare gap between exploitative elephant tourism and genuine sanctuaries is enormous. At exploitative venues, elephants undergo trauma-based breaking and are forced to perform, carry riders, or interact with tourists, causing chronic psychological stress. Ethical venues allow natural behaviour, prohibit riding and performances, provide large naturalistic spaces, and use only positive reinforcement. The global shift in tourist preference away from riding has driven some facilities to reform, though genuine verification remains difficult.
