Heat stroke is a life-threatening emergency in dogs that is almost entirely preventable through owner education about temperature risks and warning signs.
Heat stroke causes extreme suffering including respiratory distress, collapse, seizures, and organ failure. Dogs cannot effectively cool themselves through panting in high ambient temperatures, making human prevention essential. Never leave dogs in parked vehicles, avoid exercise during the hottest parts of the day, and provide constant access to cool water and shade. Early signs include heavy panting, drooling, reddened gums, and lethargy. Emergency cooling with cool (not cold) water and immediate veterinary care are life-saving.
