Welfare Considerations

Primate sanctuary quality ranges from excellent to exploitative. Genuine sanctuaries provide appropriate social housing for highly social species, large naturalistic enclosures, skilled behavioural and veterinary care, and lifetime commitment to residents. Primates arriving from traumatic backgrounds require years of rehabilitation and may never fully recover. Sanctuaries that breed animals, allow public handling, or sell primates are operating for commercial rather than welfare purposes and should be avoided.
