Turkeys are farmed in large numbers for seasonal and year-round consumption, with welfare challenges including fast-growth problems, housing conditions, and slaughter practices.
Farmed turkey welfare mirrors many of the problems seen in broiler chickens. Extreme growth rates cause chronic pain from skeletal disorders, cardiovascular strain, and difficulty thermoregulating in large birds. Turkey welfare would be significantly improved by mandating slower-growing breeds, improved lighting and environmental standards, and transitioning to controlled atmosphere stunning which is more reliable than water-bath systems. Consumer demand for higher-welfare turkey products, particularly at seasonal peaks, creates market incentive for production improvements.
