Effective animal welfare advocacy requires strategic prioritisation, evidence-based messaging, and coalition building to achieve systemic change for the largest number of animals.
Animal welfare advocacy is most powerful when strategically focused on the highest-impact opportunities. Given that over 70 billion farmed animals are slaughtered annually, improvements in farming practices — particularly for the most populous species including broiler chickens and laying hens — affect the greatest number of animals. Corporate campaigns, legislative advocacy, and consumer behaviour change each play roles in systemic improvement. Donors and advocates who evaluate the effectiveness of their choices can multiply their impact compared to undirected action.
