Red panda welfare in zoos is compromised by two primary failures: inadequate climate control and inappropriate social housing. Heat stress in summer can be severe and lethal — exhibits must provide consistently cool retreat areas and misters. Forced pairing or group housing of incompatible individuals generates chronic stress in these solitary animals. Enclosure design must prioritise arboreal access, multiple den sites, and species-appropriate substrates. Fresh bamboo provision is non-negotiable — bamboo quality and palatability must be assessed daily. Red pandas in inappropriate environments exhibit stereotypies, weight loss, and immune suppression. Conservation significance does not justify welfare compromise in individual animals.
