Poorly designed cubicles are among the most common sources of dairy cow welfare compromise. Cows that cannot rise and lie comfortably reduce lying time, which impairs rumination, increases standing on hard concrete, and worsens lameness. Hock lesions from abrasive or inadequately cushioned surfaces are painful and predispose to infection. Cubicle design is a balance of length, width, lunge space, and surface — errors in any dimension cascade into welfare problems. Regular monitoring of lying time (via pedometers or observation), hock scoring, and lameness records provides feedback on whether cubicle design is meeting animals' needs. Farm vets should incorporate cubicle assessment into routine herd health visits.
