Clouded leopards are highly secretive, solitary felids whose zoo welfare is challenged by social management, enclosure design, and breeding programme needs.
Clouded leopard welfare in zoos is dominated by two concerns: conspecific aggression during introductions and chronic stress from insufficient seclusion. The male aggression problem during mating has caused fatal injuries, requiring carefully managed, prolonged introductions with full separation capability at all times. These cats are poor candidates for shared enclosures and should be housed separately with visual access only unless compatibility is firmly established. Enclosure design must enable full escape from visitor viewing at all times — an always-visible exhibit causes chronic hypervigilance stress. Vertical complexity with horizontal branches at varied heights supports natural locomotor behaviour. Breeding programme goals must never override individual welfare assessments.
