Tilapia is one of the world's most widely farmed fish, yet welfare standards in tilapia aquaculture remain poorly regulated globally.
Tilapia welfare is often deprioritised due to assumptions about fish sentience and high commercial pressure to minimise costs. However, tilapia show clear behavioural and physiological responses to pain and stress. Crowding causes chronic cortisol elevation, immune suppression and increased aggression. Improving welfare requires reducing stocking densities, improving water quality, and adopting humane slaughter methods such as percussive stunning followed by bleeding.
