Aggressive dogs are often in significant psychological distress — their aggression is communication, not malice. Management through aversive punishment suppresses behaviour temporarily while increasing anxiety and the risk of severe bites. Modern rehabilitation addresses the emotional state underlying aggression through systematic desensitisation, counter-conditioning and management of triggers. A thorough veterinary assessment to rule out pain and medical causes is an essential first step before any behavioural intervention.
