Dehorning is one of the most painful routine procedures in cattle farming, and the use of anaesthesia and analgesia to manage pain remains inconsistent globally.
Dehorning without pain relief causes one of the most severe acute pain events experienced by farmed cattle. Despite this, surveys in many countries show majority of producers do not use anaesthesia or analgesia for disbudding or dehorning. Regulatory requirements for pain relief during these procedures are variable and often poorly enforced. The development and promotion of polled genetics offers a compelling long-term solution — cattle born without horns require no painful procedure. Transitioning to polled breeds should be a priority welfare goal for the beef and dairy industries.
