Separation anxiety is one of the most common and distressing behavioural problems in dogs, causing significant suffering and being a leading cause of relinquishment.
Dogs with separation anxiety experience genuine distress equivalent to panic attacks. They are not misbehaving — they are suffering. Punishment of behaviours displayed during alone time dramatically worsens anxiety. Treatment requires gradual systematic desensitisation to departure cues and alone time, ideally with medication for moderate to severe cases. The pandemic surge in dog ownership followed by return to offices created a wave of severe separation anxiety cases. Prevention through early alone-time training is far easier than treatment once established.
