Hoof care is fundamental to horse welfare, and the debate between shod and barefoot management reflects different approaches to maintaining hoof health.
Hoof health underpins overall horse welfare — lame horses suffer significantly and often chronically. The optimal approach to hoof care depends on individual horse use, conformation and environment. Barefoot horses on appropriate terrain with regular movement maintain excellent hoof health and arguably better proprioception. Horses in hard work on artificial surfaces often require shoes to prevent painful bruising. Whatever approach is taken, regular professional farriery and monitoring for any signs of lameness or hoof pathology are non-negotiable welfare requirements.
